The Singaporean cuisine!

Located in the southern part of Asia, Singapore is one of the smallest countries in the globe. Singapore has a mixed population and culture, since it was found by Indonesian king Sang Nila Utama in 1922. Since then, the town has been widely populated by Malaysians and Chinese. The advent of British brought about a consider number of Indians into the country! With such a varied culture, the cuisine of Singapore also has a wide variety of food to offer! Singaporeans often prefer hawker centres and food courts rather than restaurants as they are affordable! Some of the main and must try food of the Singaporean cuisine are discussed in this blog! 1. Kway teow- Made out of flat rice noodles, Kway teow hails from the maritime south east Asia! Some of the main ingredients include light and dark soy sauce, chilli, a small quantity of belachan, whole prawns, blood cockles without shells, chopped Chinese chives, slices of Chinese sausage, fishcake and bean sprouts! Known to be an unhealthy food due to its high fat content, kway teow was initially served to labours who preferred it due to its high energy content at a low price!

2. Nasi Lemak- Having it’s roots in Malaysia, Nasi Lemak mainly consists of fragrant rice cooked along with Pandan leaves and coconut milk. Often served in banana leaf, the rice is served along with sambal sauce, anchovies, boiled or fried egg, cucumber and lamb curry. Many minor variations of the dish are also available in South East Asia. It’s high protein content often makes it a healthy dish and is also visually appetizing with a wide variety of side dishes! A must try dish if you visit Singapore!

3. Laksa – Hailing from typical Peranakan cuisine( Chinese descendents settled in Singapore and Malaysia) , Laksa is a perfect noodle soup if you are craving for one! Tanjong Katong, an area in Singapore is famous for the special ‘Katong Laksa’. It is made out of thick wheat noodles cooked in coconut milk curry flavoured with shrimps, prawns, fishes and chicken! Get ready to lick your lips!

4. Prata and Fish head curry- A typical Indian layered bread which is soft and fluffy makes you crave for it every time you see it! A typical dinner time item which is available around hawker centres and Indian restaurants in Singapore, Prata is served along side many typical Indian curries like chicken curry! But Singaporean special combination includes Prata served alongside with spicy fish head curry which is visually appetizing! Try it out once you get onto the streets of Singapore!
